LittleBigPlanet and Infamous Quick Impressions

Recently Sony has offered 2 free PS3 games as part of their welcome back package due to the April-May PSN Outage. Five games are being offered for PS3 owners through the online Playstation store, Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD/Fury, Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD. Two of these games, Infamous and LittleBigPlanet, are full retail games while the other three are PSN games. This is a nice list of games and I personally bought LittleBigPlanet and Wipeout HD, since I already own Infamous.

Here are my thoughts about each game. LitteBigPlanet is a creative, fun platformer with a cute personality that anybody can play. It’s definitely one of the better games in the list. Playing a little sackboy traversing the levels, like back in the old Nintendo days of Mario are a delight. The controls can be annoying at times but, are fine nonetheless. What keeps this game so fresh is the ability to create deep and intricate levels and share and play them through the online community. There are literally over three million levels as of last year so, re-playability is astronomically high. This game is definitely one people should download from the list.

Wipeout HD is a decent futuristic racer where players drive some type of podracers, that to me look similar to the ones in Star Wars. The games has its thrills and it has nice colorful visuals and cool electronic/techno music. For a PSN game it does contain a lot of content. There are 80 races to unlock, 8 tracks and it has online play and trophies. Along with that this version being offered contains an expansion pack, Wipeout Fury. The expansion adds even more events, trophies and music tracks  to the already robust Wipeout HD. The game is quite hard though and can be frustrating. Speeding past racers without hitting walls or falling into last place has its challenges. The game does have a nice visual style and should be played in high definition but, that doesn’t make up for the difficulty and the repetitive racing with no goal. Wipeout HD is a decent game but, is a definite pass if you don’t own Infamous or LittleBigPlanet.

Infamous is a fantastic sand box action adventure game where you play as Cole, a deliveryman man who attains electrical super powers in an explosion. This explosion destroys part of the city in which the game takes place and it’s your job to find out why it happened and restore order to the city’s frantic population. The game has a nice variety of missions and exploring a GTA style city is pretty fun. Players can choose to be evil or good, with each side having its incentives with different powers and missions. This is the best game of the bunch and the only real flaw it has, is it doesn’t have the replayibilty that LittleBigPlanet does but, it’s one amazing game.

In conclusion, if you don’t own Infamous or LittleBigPlanet pick these to download. The other three seem like decent PSN games. I personally haven’t played Dead Nation or Super Stardust HD but, they do have decent scores, 77 and 85 according to Metacritic while Wipeout HD has a 89. If you already own the retail games, any choice of the three PSN games should satisfy any PS3 owner.
